The foggy breathing of the Northern mountain chain of the state of Puebla cocoons the place where “zacates” thrive; this is a place of traditions and millennial techniques, protected by canyons, forests and whimsical rock formations.
The Magic Town of Zacatlán is characterized by its great production of apples and its elegant and monumental clock making technique.
One of the places that get our attention is the mythical Piedras Encimadas Valley that, as the name implies, is an extraordinary area filled with enormous overlapping rocks, giving the feel that some giants played with them once upon a time; the townspeople have named them Popeye, El Dinosaurio (The Dinosaur) and Portal del Tiempo (Portal of Time), just to mention a few.
This place offers you activities such as hiking, horseback riding, zip-lines amidst the dense forest, and camping.
For the kids, there is an Animal Farm that allows you to feed their collection of goats, horses, cows, rabbits and sheep.
Another natural attraction is the San Pedro Waterfall, where you will admire the
greatest panoramic views of the city, as well as getting the chance to cool off on its fresh waters.
At the town’s Historic Center, you will be able to find the enormous Floral Clock, a work done by Alberto Olvera; a museum with the name of this famous personality (who was born in this city), and that is dedicated to show the mastery behind fine clockmakers, is established nearby.
During the weekends, this Clockmaking Museum conducts an Automaton Show, which narrated the history of the city with a light and sound spectacle that adorn the traditional suits of the actors, from its balconies.
Other cultural and architectonic attractions offered by this Magic Town are: the San Pedro and San Pablo Parishes, both built in the 17th Century with stone quarry and designed with a neo-Classical style that highlights its huge 5 diameter clock, and the Franciscano de Zacatlán Ex-convent, the oldest one in the state of Puebla (1567) and the only building of this type that is still working in all of Latin America for over 400 years.
The cuisine of the state is highly recommended, given that its traditional dishes are beef and chicken mixiotes, rabbit, lamb, tlacoyos, country squab and gorditas.
Zacatlán’s Bakery is highly acknowledged for its wide variety of sweet and savory breads, such as burras, almohadas, picadas, morelianas, croissants, puñaladas, bread of Day of the Dead and honey cookies.
The drinks here are prepared with apple, which is why wines, ciders, fruit liquors and soda pops are the most produced by its townspeople.
The San Rafael Cider Factory has been functioning since the year 1930, and you will be able to tour its facilities; as well as the Delicia Winery.
In the Municipal Revolución Market, you will be able to purchase from the most traditional of candies like crystallized and dehydrated apples, quince candies, figs, blackberries, dates, jamoncillos and pumpkins to the most beautiful of artisanal crafts made by the townspeople like quexquemetl woolen blankets, shawls, loom belts, wooded and ceramic utensils besides figurines made with maize leaves called Totomoxtle.
