The Magical Town of Viesca may seem like many other small towns, but its history is enormous, and stands out.
An excellent example is that the independence icon, Miguel Hidalgo, was kept captive here in 1811.
Another one is that President Benito Juarez stayed here, even signing a decree.
And if that wasn’t enough, the old Hacienda de Hornos hosted president Lazaro Cardenas.
You can find this historic town in southern Coahuila, some 70 km.
(43 mi.
) from the city of Torreon.
Another big draw for Viesca is its famous Dunes of Bilbao, located in the town’s outskirts.
This is a natural wonder, offering stunning panoramas of the desert.
The dunes, in years long past, were the beds of the Sea of Tethys.
It is an ideal location to discover more about the desert and similar ecosystems.
You can also practice cycling, or camp to enjoy a few days full of adventure, as well as peaceful and quiet hikes atop the white sand.
With some separation from any larger cities, Viesca is an open invitation for both the peace
and adventure that only the countryside can offer.
All of it with provincial touches from history.
