Located just 45 kilometers from México City, surrounded by extensive cacti patches and in the middle of a semidry landscape, the place where the moon and the sun were created can be found.
In San Juan Teotihuacán, the passing of time has been defeated time and time again.
It is the biggest and most visited archeological site of the American continent and has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
It is possible to admire the beauty and greatness of this construction while biking around the location.
You will be able to observe the colossal edifications that, legend has it, were built by giants.
The Sun Pyramid is the biggest building of the city; it has 365 steps, which allow you to reach the upper platform of the pyramid and it is speculated that each step represents the days of the year; it is 63 meters in height with a base similar in size to the Keops Pyramid (225 meters) that can be found in Guiza, Egypt.
During the night, you can enjoy a spectacle of light and sound that is projected in the frontal side of the pyramid, which has been
denominated as the Nocturnal Experience of Teotihuacán, starting at 8:00 pm.
The Moon Pyramid is the second biggest building of the city according to its size and importance.
It is 42 meters in height and its square base is 45 meters in width per side.
The Quetzalpapálotl Temple, the “Serpiente Emplumada” (Feathered Snake) Pyramid, the “Ciudadela” (Citadel), and the “Calzada de los Muertos” (Road of the Dead) with its more than 2 kilometers in length, are cultural precincts that receive more than 50,000 people each year during the month of March; traditionally, Mexicans and foreigners attend the city to witness the Spring equinox dressed completely in white, with the intention of fulfilling an ”energy” ritual.
Teotihuacán is also known as the place where men turn to Gods, and besides its pyramids and pre-Hispanic ruins, the site has museums, a sculptural garden, a botanic garden and an outdoors theatre.
These activities will complement your cultural visit.
If you are traveling with your family, remember that a Zoo is located nearby, and it is known as “Reino Animal” (Animal Kingdom), a place where your little ones can learn about the native animals of the region and many others.
The place that you must visit to try Teotihuacán’s typical dishes is the restaurant called “La Gruta” (The Cave).
Several great personalities of our history have eaten here, like Porfirio Díaz, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, all of them attracted to the restaurant’s originality and eccentricity, since the facility is located inside a cavern.
You will be able to enjoy great Mexican food like pozole, “setas al ajillo” (garlic mushrooms), rabbit and quail stews, and beef broth, always accompanied with nopales and “xoconostles”.
If you have the chance to visit us during August, there is a town nearby called San Martín de las Pirámides, which offers the Tuna Festival (Cactus Fruit), one of the many typical products of the region, and you will also learn about the indigenous gastronomy that still gets prepared in this region; for example, try the famous “Chinicuiles” which are red caterpillars that can be found on maguey stems, escargot accompanied with nopales, onion, tomatoes and green chili.
If you don’t have the chance to enjoy the equinox, you can plan your trip during the month of December, as piñata contests take place only during the Holiday seasons and the whole town celebrates them.
Remember to bring comfortable footwear so you can roam the archeological sites without any discomfort.
