Surrounded by forests rich with pines, oaks, firs, and ash trees, Tapalpa is a place that breathes adventure and a mysticism ambiance located in the Southern parts of Jalisco.
Considered to be a Magic Town, it still preserves that agrarian and countryside spirit.
Tapalpa means “land of colors” or “place located in the heights” and with honor, it wears that name proudly given that in this region, the Paragliding World Cup takes place, an international paragliding competition, so if you were looking for a place to practice or appreciate this sport, look no further and visit the Balcón Mountain so you can land in Piedrotas.
This place is also called the Valley of Enigmas, since you will find gigantic stones that are surrounded by forests and creeks, giving the location a magical and mythical atmosphere full of whimsical rock formations.
Tapalpa is also home of an old Paper Factory, the first one in all of Latin America, that is now abandoned and brimming with undergrowth.
One of the main architectonic attractions is the San Antonio de Tapalpa
Temple, a building designed with a neo-Classic style, which was constructed by French friars; a center with two stone quarry fountains is the highlight of this building.
The “Fiesta Grande” (Big Party) takes place during the month of January, where the celebrations are in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, and regional dances, fireworks and social gatherings are presented, all enjoyed by pilgrims, tourists and visitors alike.
The Carnival is celebrated during the months of April and March, blending together with the Easter Holiday.
During this festivity, you will be able to appreciate the typical clothing of the region: the man wears a charro suit and the woman wears a “china poblana” dress.
The gastronomy consists of sheep “al pastor”, chard tamales and “birria”.
Some of the traditional drinks are pomegranate punch, nut rompope and pulque.
The “Pilas de Agua” are also an obligated spot in your visit, a land filled with colors; these water pools have names related to legends such as the “Culebras”, “Tecolote”, “Del Perro” and “Colorada”, to mention a few.
In the Nogal Dam, you will be able to practice sport fishing, camping, swimming and kayaking.
Remember to try the delicious milk candies and the traditional “borrachito”.

visit the “Salto del Nogal”, a reserve that has a waterfall, 105 meters in height, and which is said to be the biggest waterfall of the state of Jalisco.
This site is decorated by a pine and oak forest, ideal to practice hiking and alpinism.
The stony formations of “Los Frailes” are also a suitable place to practice extreme sports.
The Ekopark also allows the practice of extreme sports such as hiking, rappelling, trekking, zip-lines, and gotcha.
Remember to make a touring plan that fulfills all of your expectations, like the Canopytour, which has a walkway that lasts approximately 40 minutes, and after, you will descend through one of its 9 zip-lines of different heights and lengths.
Have in mind that the artisanal crafts of the place are made with wool so you will be able to find blankets, “jorongos”, bags, but also sandals, wood-carved crafts and pottery.
You must definitely try the famous “banderitas” which are drink prepared with tequila, lime and sangria.
Remember to purchase some candies in its syrup, “jamoncillos”, caramels and the famous “pegostes”.
Also, bring a sweater because the night can get really chilly!
